Silence……

It was early morning, she got out of bed and so did he…

He went into the portico picked up the morning paper, she went into the kitchen made herself a cup of coffee and tea for him……

She gave him the tea where he was sitting on the sofa, flipping through the pages of the news paper and sat on the chair opposite to his to dink her coffee…….

Breakfast was ready by the time he showered and got dressed for office. They both sat together on the dining table for breakfast never speaking a word the whole time, each finished their breakfast with continued silence…..

He left for office and she went into the kitchen. She did some household errands throughout morning, made herself lunch, ate it while flipping through the channels on TV. Following that she started knitting humming her favourite tunes……

It was already evening by the time she finished knitting for the day. He came home changed into casuals, sat on the sofa watching news. She dint come out of kitchen till it was time for dinner…….

Dinner again was a silent affair as neither of them even bothered to look up from their plates. After cleaning up the dinner remains they both went to bed…..

It had always been like this since their marriage 25 years earlier. It was not like they had not tried to talk to each other… they had as newlyweds, but even then there were more awkward silences than either was ready to admit. They had married early in life because their parents wanted them to and also because they dint have the nerve to choose otherwise. They were not great at tête-à-tête but then she was not always like this (vacant and hushed) from before either and nor was he this grim and self engrossed. Even they had, had dreams but it was lost somewhere in the humdrum of life. He had wanted to be a cricketer and she a singer. But somewhere in between marriage and life together they had lost the very soul of what they wanted out of life and marriage. Now like so many other couples even they were just trying very hard to exist, they had never really lived (not even for a moment) and probably never would!!!
